Crystal shards in the Wastes!
I'd been slowly building up to this over the last few months and got the go-ahead from the mods to start the energy influx plot in earnest!
What's going on?
After the first week of January, the weather starts to take a turn for the springlike as snow melts and turns to mud everywhere. In addition to this, plants and trees wake up a bit earlier than they should, covering the area in brilliant flowers. What's causing this unseasonably warm weather is a strange, non-dreamotion energy flowing in from the Wastelands, but the source remains a mystery until someone manages to trace it to a number of black, obsidian-like crystal shards half-buried in the sand some distance out.
Concerned about the possible repercussions should this flow of energy continue unchecked, a quest has been posted to the Dream Board asking people who can withstand the Wastelands to either break these crystal shards, or to bring them back to the observatory in Reverein for observation.
Timeline
This is the setup for a player plot that will reach its conclusion in the first week of February, when everything will come to a head. I will post a log at that time for the finale. In the mean time, some things to note are as follows:
The shards will not be easy to destroy, and should anyone attempt to approach one, it will coalesce the ambient energy into a body to defend itself. These bodies will appear to be made of smoke and take the vague shape of a dragon, and are very capable of inflicting some real damage. Once a smoke monster is subdued, the shard may be destroyed or brought back to the Observatory. Shards are approximately 1ft/30cm and can easily be carried. If a shard is destroyed, its flow of energy will immediately cease.
In the final week of January, all the shards will go missing whether they are being kept in the Observatory or not, but no one will be able to figure out how.
Finale
At the first of February, it will be revealed that the shards are fragments of Asura's Spiritual Entity, who had intentionally planted them out in the Wastelands, and they will return to him on their own at the first of the month. After re-absorbing the shards, he'll lose control of the excess energy contained within them and go berserk. He will instinctively avoid Reverein so as not to drag civilians into it, but a boss fight will be inevitable.
What does all this mean?
I won't be posting a log until the finale at the first of February, but everyone is welcome to participate in the shard hunt or deal with the unseasonably warm weather in the meanwhile.
Finale sign-ups:
I will take up to four sign-ups for a boss fight thread with Asura himself, but any number of people can fight one of Asura's shards, which will be running on autopilot should players wish to work together to defeat them. The shards will take on the same smoke-dragon form as in the wastes, and defeating one will shatter the shard.
After Asura is defeated, the excess ambient energy will immediately disperse, and Songerein's weather will go back to normal.
Something to note:
Prolonged exposure to the shards will cause agitation and irritability, and symptoms will progressively worsen the longer one is exposed, so people who find them are highly encouraged to turn them in to the observatory rather than hang onto them.
The fight with Asura and his shards will be localized to a field out in the farmlands a safe distance from town, so anyone who doesn't want to deal with that can easily avoid it.
