DREAM NOTES #05.5: JANUARY MINI EVENT DETAILS
Although it's a mini event, we're throwing out the deets so players can plot ahead! Everyone get their hoot hoot game on.
✵ MINI EVENT TIMELINE ✵
This is a mini event that will take place in Songerein and is not a dreamscape. Although the beginning will catch everyone's attention, participation is optional. It is entirely possible for characters to stay out of it and let others take care of the issue. There will only be one log and it will go up on January 15. However it will be forward dated to last during the last week of the month. It will run through the rest of the month with the conclusion posted in the beginning of February. The aim is during the Game Notes, but depending on things we may need an extra day or two.
✵ OWL EGG HUNT ✵
As briefly described in this month's Game Notes, not only is Santa Claus coming to town, he's bringing in some information about the Story Eater. But he's also come to warn about a large owl, so that will have to take precedence.
This owl is large, fiery, and a mother looking for some lost eggs. She's managed to track down the culprits to the town, but everyone would prefer if she didn't raze Reverein to the ground in her search. With Santa as the interpreter, the objectives are simple:
- Find the lost eggs;
- Eliminate the snoyotes that stole them
However, those who volunteer to help will discover an objective that neither Santa nor Mama Owl expected:
- Help take care of the owl hatchlings
Some eggs will either have hatched or will hatch not long after being found. And one saving grace is these eggs are tough. They are not impervious, but they will be difficult to break, so it's okay if they're dropped accidentally. However, the eggs will be sensitive to emotions and magic around them, so care should still be taken. They are also rather…special, and finding—and catching—them will not be as straightforward as one might think.
For flexibility, there is no set number of eggs or owlets that can be found, however there is a minimum of 5 eggs/owlets that need to be counted to be considered a success. The town won't be destroyed if it fails, but it will affect something else.
For a large bonus reward and scene, minimum of 5 snoyotes must be killed or dealt with somehow. Though one has to wonder how those snoyotes managed to get those owl eggs…or where it even came from.
Participating players will need to submit their threads to this survey. And this time we'll display the results to be a little fancier and more accessible for players to see how progress is.
Here is a brief summary of the prompts that will be going up on the log:
- Owl Egg Hunt. The eggs are scattered throughout the town Reverein, the nearby forests, and the lake. As if sensing their danger, the eggs have hidden themselves in various nooks and crannies, which can make it quite difficult to find. Hopefully no one accidentally tries to cook one. However, there are some clues. They will sparkle and will sometimes wiggle and roll out of their hiding place. They can also be "lured" out by friendly, positive emotions, or towards anyone that might exude a feeling of safety, security, and protection. However, if they're frightened the eggs will start to hatch. They sprout wings, legs, or even the beak to try and either escape or protect themselves. The eggs may also take on elemental characteristics, such as turning into a fireball, a block of ice, a giant rock, or a mini cyclone. Another threat will be the snoyotes as the sly buggers will follow would be rescuers to find the egg and try to snatch them and run off.
- Owlet Panic. For the eggs that have already hatched, the owlets will be panicking and very emotional, causing a great environmental disruption around them. From fire storms to massive blizzards, the babies are out of control. Fortunately they're easy to spot—as well as hear. Their high pitched screeches can be heard from long distances. Calming emotions will be key in trying to soothe them, though dremoation abilities may be needed to get to them first.
- Snoyotes. The snoyotes are a cross between snake and coyote and they rely on their stealth skills rather than offensive power. They will stick to the shadows and can camouflage themselves well. When they do need to fight, they are tenacious and will try to sink their venomous fangs into their assailant. The venom is paralytic and is potent and fast acting. Although not always enough to kill, if enough venom makes its way to the heart then there might be trouble. As mentioned they will follow those looking for eggs to try and snatch them first, but some may be hunting other eggs. It's not necessary to kill them, driving them off to the Wild Canyons will do. Bonus: collect the fangs for anti-venom remedies.
- Owlsitter. Whether already hatched or bursting out after returning to mother owl, the little owlets can be quite the handful. They're born already large enough to fly and while they aren't skilled, they will flutter about here and there. Essentially toddlers, they will get into anything that might interest them and cause mischief. With the owlets capable of casting elemental magic, that can pose a problem as sometimes it can go awry.
In addition, we'll have a subthread for Questions For Santa that characters can ask. However, because we want to stay sane and be able to answer questions promptly without going off tangent in unnecessary dialogue, it won't be an IC thread. Instead, players can just comment with their questions that their character can ask. In addition, it can be assumed that other characters can hear or learn of other questions and answers so players can piggyback off each other. While any question can be asked, Santa will be most concerned about the current state of affairs with the Story Eater and how it's wrecking up things. Perhaps he might know something about the missing moon…

QUESTIONS

Character: Ira
Plotting:
Given that Ira's been having a rough time with nightmares and all of that, fighting off some snoyotes might be something of a stress reliever, especially if he goes all out. So yeah, he's down for taking care of some snoyotes.
He might be able to help coax the eggs out as well, but given that a lot of negativity has been building around him, it might have the adverse effects.

Character: Madhuri Qalli (OC/FFXIV)
Plotting: Maddie is looking to find her some eggs and help the mama owl. It's what Santa wants, of course, so who is she to refuse? But I plan for her getting bitten, so a little help would be appreciated.
Then once she's better somehow, she'll want to help care for baby birds and will definitely need some co-parenting help. She only knows how to care for adult birds like her chocobo and her yol... not very rowdy, troublemaking round beebs. Help?
Extra:
Monster Hunter had a crossover with FFXIV once. As a huge monster hunter nerd I appreciated it. I know Rathalos is the mascot but I would have loved a fast-paced Zinogre fight.
no subject
Character: Diluc Ragnvindr
Plotting: Diluc likes birds more than he likes most people, so he will absolutely take the initiative to assist in the egg hunt. I also really, really want him to owlsit because I'm a simple creature who wants this man to be soft toward baby birds.
Extra: Seriously, his constellation is an OWL and he is a Pyro character. This mini-event was made for him.
Character: Hilda Valentine Goneril
Plotting: She will want to sit this one out, ICly. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Looking for eggs and dealing with unruly owl babies sounds like too much work for her. But if someone wants her to stumble into owl-wrangling or fighting a snoyote, I could be convinced.

Character: Anastasia Romanova
Plotting: Anya will definitely volunteer to to help Mama Owl in finding her owl eggs and looking after the baby owlets. She will unlock her light magic during this event by blinding the synotes’ eyes while they are trying to attack Pooka.
Extra: Anya is really good with kids and animals, so how hard could baby owlets with elemental magic be?
no subject
Character: Oriphi
Plotting: Hi, guess who can shapeshift into a giant owl (but not as giant as giant fire owl mama) since things aren't happening in a dreamscape :>
She can help soothe panicking baby owls and help others fly to them if they want to hitch a ride on her back. She'll also want to help with owlsitting and acting like a big owl sister to the lil owlets if it helps!
Extra: I'm not planning on doing a top-level for this one so please let me know if you'd like for me to tag into yours! ♥

Character: Thoma
Plotting: Thoma has a huge soft spot for animals and his heart will definitely go out to mama owl. He’ll be available for basically anything in this event, but I’d really love for him to help take care of baby owls especially! If anyone wants him for egg hunting or snoyote slaying, he will def be down for that as well! He is an accomplished fighter with the ability to wield fire magic and create shields. Also good for moral support.
Extra: I can’t be the only one getting these vibes right

Character: Eustace | Granblue Fantasy
Plotting: Debating if I should toplevel or not because ha ha ha ha, but he would at least be around helping to find eggs, deal with snoyotes, and help take care of the babies if needed. I would prefer pre-planning something out just to help balance my load, so I'll be happy to plot something with anyone! He'll be useful in keeping things calm at least.
==========================
Character: Rokurou Rangetsu | Tales of Berseria
Plotting: Since I might not be topleveling with Eustace, I'll be doing so with Rokurou instead! It'll be all 3 with egg finding, getting rid of snoyotes, and babysitting owls. He may or may not start off with asking if giant egg that appears in his kitchen is the owl egg or edible—

Character: Soldier: 76
Plotting: Likely not to be top leveling with 76, as of this point in time while he'll be more healed from the very violent start of the player plot heavily involving the Glowing Dawn anti-Noctaere flowers, he's still going to be on rest/bed rest.
That said, I'm still happy to toss him somewhere as at this point he will be restless and antsy so very likely to sneak out to do something- even if it's babysitting owls with Blue the dragon doing a majority of that as she adores owl-shaped things and can play soft.

Character: Hunter De Vil
Plotting: Rescuing a bunch of eggs and giving them back to mum? Seems like an easy job, or at least easier than trying to kidnap a bunch of puppies in more ways than one. Little does he know that the eggs are magical. And hatching. And now he has to babysit birds. Hunter might try to drag in someone who seems to have good vibes, so at least he has some help?
As for Snoyotes... Hunter is not a combatant, but he will think to set some traps for those in case they try to get in the way. Unfortunately, they are not as sophisticated as he's used to, and it's entirely possible that he might accidentally ensnare another character instead. Hope you like rope traps.
Character: Luca Balsa
Plotting: Luca will be
working on that generator thing and completely miss the giant fire owlnot too involved in this event, but he will pose some questions to Santa Claus. After all, this will job his memory about that letter he got from the Story Teller when he first came here...Extra:

Character: Alastor
Plotting: Alastor is from Hell, so talking owls aren't a big deal for him. However, he does have a track record of defending others who can't defend themselves (even if he does traumatize them while doing so). He will take care of the little owlets as best he can and will freaking tear up any snoyotes who get too close to his charges. He's just going to be awkward if anyone calls out that the big bad Radio Demon saved some baby giant owls.

re: the snoyote venom
In light of the paralysis of Jiang Yanli's arm, I had the thought to potentially use this and Wei Wuxian's worry re: that mess to get him dabbling with The Bad Juju (in this case nightmare energy) again. I'm tossing a couple of kinds of pasta at the wall here, please let me know if any of this is feasible and what I might need to know if so?
(General question: Are the snoyotes in any way nightmare-energy-oriented or are they just hungry and mad?)
A:
Can an antivenom of some kind be developed using nightmare energy as a venom substitute? (This is a super rough idea but I wanted to check with y'all before I dug any deeper into it.)
B:
In canon, proper application of the right paper talisman can draw lingering curses/poisons out of the victim and into the talisman user. Would that sort of thing be possible with the venom?
B2: If drawing the paralysis into himself is possible, could he then potentially (non-scientific phrasing here but) burn it away somehow with nightmare energy over time? (I already figure that if this is possible, it would be a slow process and also be very Not Good For Him - neither of which would actually deter him.)
Re: the snoyote venom
A: It would not work since nightmare energy works differently from poisons. Using nightmare energy would instead make the poisons more potent with strange, negative side effects (imagination roams free on those). The "anti-" nightmare energy would just be normal dreamotion energy.
B: Yes, but they would need to be able to construct such a talisman and that will more likely require dreamotion. Fae magic is also an option, but dreamotion is the safer bet.
B2: In this case it might be possible, though not without consequence. One would need to have trained up to be able to control nightmare energy to be able to concentrate it to destroy the poison, and that will take much longer than trying to control dreamotion energy due to how volatile nightmare energy is. Otherwise, the nightmare energy will distort and worsen the poison's effects instead.
