DREAM NOTES #28: DECEMBER 1, 2023
WE'VE HIT DECEMBER! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone! We know this can be a pretty hectic time of the year, so we hope everyone will be able to find time to rest and relax! We have…quite a bit available for the month!

The Official Calendar has been updated. Here is our current schedule for the month:

DREAM TREND: This month's dream trends may involve any of the following themes: warm, cozy feelings; fire, freezing. |
WEATHER: The weather will start off with some light snow happening during the first week of the month, and for most of the month things will be quite enjoyable! A true, peaceful, winter wonderland to enjoy the usual winter festivities—until the blizzard hits. |
OTHER NOTES: N/A |
Happy December, all! It's our TDM month, and with the holidays in mind, we are keeping the event on the "fun" side, but there is also some nightmare fun as well đź‘€
While we aren't holding any official Christmas specific events, players are welcome to host their own. ICly, the event won't happen until after Christmas day, December 25, so that should offer enough time for characters to do their own thing without it being spoiled.
We also have our traditional half AC and free passes this month, so read the AC Results for more.
AC RESULTS
Congratulations to everyone who commented on our Activity Check! The following characters were removed from the game:
Sandalphon |

If anyone was swept because they missed AC, you can reapply in the next cycle. Just fair warning, we will notice if this happens more than once and we may not allow immediate reapplication the next time.
This puts our player population to 70/85.
IMPORTANT FOR DECEMBER ACTIVITY CHECK!! For this month only, we are requesting HALF AC from everyone. That means only one thread of 5 comments is required to pass AC this month.
A FREE PASS will be rewarded to those who submit two proofs like usual AC. This will be player bound so only one pass per player. If you have multiple characters, all of them need to hit the full AC.
The free pass can be used anytime in 2024 ONLY, however it cannot be used before or after a hiatus. We don't want a hiatus > free pass > hiatus situation. We also reserve the right to refuse the free pass if a player has questionable activity and a free pass would only continue to let them skirt by AC. Our squatting rules still apply.
NEW CAP AND APPS
Just a reminder that as mentioned in the State of the Game, we are reducing our player cap to 85 and we will now have a flat app cap of 15 slots for new players. We've pretty much stabilized and this should keep us in the population range we want to be and not stress players too much about applications.
The app cap is only to new players. Current players do not count towards the app cap.
WORLD UPDATES
Be it new NPCs, creatures, places, or some other discovery or creation, the world of Songerein continues to grow! For official lists and information, refer to the World Directory and Bestiary. So here are a few things as a result of the Dream Board and other submissions:
Places:
The Wild Harvest serves various western and eastern style earth-based street food dishes. A special menu is rotated every month.

Eggnog and Hot Chocolate: Eggnog is a holiday staple. Made from scratch with cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and an alcohol of your choice: brandy, rum, bourbon, or none of the above for a nonalcoholic alternate, in a recipe that brings everything together for a perfect balance between sweetness and spice. If you prefer something a little more chocolaty, the Harvest's hot chocolate returns. It comes in a variety of flavors, including blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, and matcha. Rich and sweet in flavor, marshmallows and whipped cream are available to top it all off, and each mug is also served with a candy cane stirrer for minty flavour.
Sukiyaki: A Japanese hotpot dish meant to be shared with others. Comes with a meat of customer's choice (thinly-sliced beef, pork, or chicken) along with tofu, onions, mushrooms, various vegetables and noodles. Available for individual and group size.
Fresh Stew w/ side of Cornbread: A bowl of stew that warms from the inside out and is filling. A mix of veggies and tender meat all cooked together in a flavorful broth that will leave you satisfied. Comes with a side of freshly baked cornbread to help sop up any of the broth left.
Eggnog Donuts: AA light and fluffy doughnut with the right amount of lingering warmth that makes you want to eat more, but doesn't melt off the dipped on frosting. Carries a sweet, rich, and very creamy frosting with pleasant notes of vanilla mixed with cinnamon and nutmeg. Comes in orders of; single, pair, half dozen, or baker's dozen.
With the changing of the month and seasons, you can bet that The Wild Harvest has once again changed with them; the area has been decorated for the winter festivities with colorful light fixtures that are warm and so very welcoming to those who so much as pass near. Beckoning passerby to step inside, even if only for a moment to warm themselves from the chill in the air; blankets await those at every table.
Patrons will receive a small gift box that contains a festively shaped and decorated cookie, along with a small handmade animal plush that can float in the air and light up pending on the person's mood.
ORKILI
Orkili continues to develop and by the time December hits, the reactor continues to be stabilized—with the help of some new crystal caverns that were discovered. It took a bit to get the infrastructure set for the new tunnels and transportation, but it's all set and now as they continue to investigate, they can at least operate at an 80% capacity without too much risk.
Orkili is also now allowing visitors to come in and starting to work out routes to try to better reach Reverein through underground tunnel systems. Due to the upcoming event we won't have an open log or anything for this, but here are a few things that are available and will be available again:
Sandworm Nursery. Officially open for visits! Perhaps someone might want to try and train one of their own…?
A stubborn turtle. One of the new taverns includes a turtle with a crystal shell guarding it. While it's allowing the Orkilins to harvest, it's demanding "offerings" in exchange and it's grown pickier in the past few weeks. Anyone good at cooking spinach?
Investigating noctaere sightings. Although it hasn't come near the city, there are more signs of that noctaere creature lurking around. Anyone willing to search deeper into the caves are welcome to volunteer to try and figure out where it's going.
These are all free prompts that anyone can use at any time, but players are welcome to PM or drop a comment asking for more details.
WINTER WONDERLAND
For most of the month, things will be peaceful for the denizens of Reverein. Those in Orkili will find the whole snow and winter strange, and while the city is now allowing more of its citizens back in—which some happily return to for the warmer underground caverns—others will stick around curious to see how things fare.
Magic Snowfall. Snow will fall for most but not all days, just enough to keep the ground blanketed in white. This time, the snow will be affected by emotions around them, which can be a bit problematic when it comes to the snowmen being made. While most stay stationary, some will come to life and behave like those around them. So if someone is grumpy, it will chuck snowballs. If someone is feeling energetic, they will chuck snowballs. Happy? Chuck sno—no, they would actually offer some scarves or mittens that appear from somewhere. Don't ask. (Definitely not stolen.)
Ugly Get-Along Sweaters. No one knows when it could happen to them, but two people will suddenly find themselves stuck together in ugly Christmas sweaters. How to get out? Well, they have to do as the itchy label says: get along for an hour.
Gift on the Shift. On the first day of December, everyone will discover a small present on a shelf somewhere with a note attached to it. It will have instructions that this is a little game where every day the present will appear in a new location, and if they avoid the present until Christmas day, it will transform into a large gift. However, if they stare at it too long or touch it, it will burst open and pull a prank before it's reset. Seems simple…until the box appears in very inconvenient places that will tempt or frustrate the person to move it. How long can they hold out?
Gumdrops. Instead of traditional "magic mistletoe" we have cute little slug looking fae called Gumdrops. There are three different types that will fly around hungry for certain types of dreamotion energy. They will "pair" up people and the color they are indicates what kind of energy they're seeking. You can better believe they will be taking advantage of any other mistletoe hijinks going on. Fortunately they will have cues to help the trapped "pair" out and will gift a small box of tasty gumdrop candies once they are satisfied.Fluff: White in color, these Gumdrops will be seeking fluffy feelings. Their main words are "fuwa fuwa," "fluff fluff," and "coo cute" and will fly around in the air to give a cute little dance. This is your "friendship level" Gumdrop where hugs, cuddles, and other more platonic gestures of affection will be acceptable. However, don't think it'll end with just one hug. They want a lot of fluff! Several hugs may be required, or they may want to see the pair have a nice time. Maybe even sharing coffee or something to strengthen that bond.
Make it Shippy: Pink in color, these want to see ~love~ in the air. Their main phrases will make it quite obvious what they want: "kiss!" "smooch!" It could be just the beginnings of crushes so flirting or chaste kisses, or a bit more serious so get hot and heavy. Well, maybe not too heavy, but they will happily gobble up more intimate displays. Just get a room, they'll wait outside. They also aren't particular about their pairings, which makes this a little dangerous. While they will be able to sense those who may be attracted to each other, these little "matchmakers" will also pull in two random strangers who may not even know each other. At least there are options!
Mistlefoe: Red in color, they want to see a fight. Get those sparks and high emotional waves going through aggression instead. Their phrases are along the lines of "cut!" "smash!" "grrr!!" and "destroy!" Of course they don't want anyone to actually die, but...well not their problem if it happens. While physical fighting will be the most obvious, verbal slaps will also work. The key emotion they want is based on the tension created from conflict and confrontation, but hey, some folks might get a kick out of it.
Their appearance is completely random and players can choose which one appears for their characters. It's also possible to chain gumdrops, so it's possible for a pair to first have the Fluff gumdrop and then get stuck with the Shippy one.
Dreamotion energy must manifest for the Gumdrop to be satisfied; just performing the act will not be enough. The effects could be subtle, like temperatures heating up, sparks flying about, snow melting, the sunlight shining around them, little hearts or bubbles appearing. But the more prominent it is—like flowers blooming, colors changing, music in the air, a giant heart erupting from the ground, fire and lightning, the ground rupturing and turning to lava—the less time the pair will need to be stuck together—maybe. It's always possible the Gumdrop will find them very tasty and keep them there longer…
Merry Christmas more like Merry Chaos—
FROZEN NIGHTMARE
IMPORTANT: Before getting into what's happening, here are some dates. ICly this will happen starting December 26. OOCly, the log will go up December 15.
On the morning after Christmas, December 26th, everyone will awaken to dark clouds that have come in overnight, or how the snow keeps falling and falling and falling throughout the entire day…and the next until it's less snow and now a blizzard of sleet and hail, threatening to freeze over not only Reverein, but to the lands beyond, including Dragefjell, dragon island. Everyone is forced to take shelter inside, and while some dare to go out, it's dangerous.
On the fourth day, before people really start going mad, strange messages written in frost will appear on their windows:
mAd
qUeEn
Not ominous at all. Nor is how everyone will suddenly fall asleep and awaken in a strange dreamscape, with a young man floating in front of them. Well, what looks like a young man. He's a bit… Fragmented, his entire body made of shards of ice. He will be the one to help explain the situation: his name is Jack Frost, and the Ice Queen has succumbed to some nightmare he can't wake her from. He needs their help to figure out the cause of her nightmares and free her. They must traverse through a strange candy land to reach the ice mountain the Ice Queen is currently in. Unfortunately, he doesn't have enough power left to do more than appear like this, so it's up to the Dreamwalkers to save the day. Again.
This event will have three sections. The first section will be set in Reverein during the first few days of the freeze. The second section will be set in the first part of the dreamscape. The third part will be set in the second.
IN REVEREIN:
Bunkered down. From Day 2 onward, it will be highly advised that everyone stay indoors. The harsh sleet and hail, the blistering winds, and just overall dangerous elements outside make it unwise to step out. Hope people have games or something to play with, otherwise just use the journals to communicate with each other.
Delivering Heat. Those capable of dreamotion will find keeping the heat easier than most. However, those who are less adept may need some heaters or learn how to use their fireplace. Fortunately, there are items called fire cores that don't require dreamotion and can serve just as well as fire. Orkili will also send some heating devices. The problem, however, is getting them delivered. Orkili will…figure out their own way to get to Reverein (hint: the gnomes under town are gonna have a fit), but there's still the issue of delivering them to people's homes. There may be a need to find more cores, which the dragons can provide but they also need help getting down as they can't fly through the blizzard.
Helping those outside. For thosestupidfearless enough to go outside and get stuck, they will need to be rescued. But there are also those who were unable to make it back who are trapped, including animals. Dreamotion will help to keep the frigid cold at bay and once again anything heat related such as fire will help melt away the snow. However, it's quick to come back, so everyone must act fast.
Ice elementals. Later in the week, right before they are sent to the dreamscape, one or two monstrous ice elementals will appear outside of town. Those who are capable of withstanding the cold and pack the heat need to try and take them down before they get any closer!
DREAMSCAPE PART I: CANDYLAND
Candyland? The setting is quite strange given the circumstances, as everyone will find themselves in a candy themed land. That's not snow, that's icing, the trees are lollipops and licorice, and the road is made of circular flat candies that have the letters "S" or "M" on them (don't you even). Everything, and we mean everything is made out of candy. Yet what should be a joyful delicious place has a hideous taint to it. While most of it is colorful and bright, there are large areas where large chunks are melted, rotting, or greatly discolored. Ew.
Board game. The road to the ice mountain looming in the distance is not only made of definitely not trademarked candy, but are of different colored squares. That's right, it's not just a candy themed place, it's the actual board game and everyone is playing it. We'll be creating our own little "cards" (ie, prompts) for the different colored squares, so look forward to that. Characters (and thus players) will have to kick a giant gummy dice that will allow them to move up so many number of squares (we can't really simulate a spinner so next best thing) and whatever color square they land on will be their prompt. So yes. EVERYONE IS PLAYING CANDYLAND THROUGH RP ENJOY. (side note: you don't have to thread an entire game, feel free to handwave chunks and focus on the fun bits)
Transformations. To make things more interesting, characters will be turned into one of the following forms upon entering the dreamscape: candified (have fun with that), ice sprites, and unicorns. Why unicorns you ask? Instant free pass to the first person who can figure out the reference. Like always, players can make the transformations as little and as much as they want, so feel creative! All dreamotion abilities are available to characters, and they can form new ones based on their form.
More traps than fights. For this portion of the dreamscape, there aren't a lot of "enemies" that will hinder the characters. It will mostly consist of traps and challenges that they'll have to get through. But there will be some smaller enemies that will need to be dealt with.
DREAMSCAPE PART II: FROZEN MOUNTAIN
Frozen Mountain. Should they manage to reach the end of the board, they will find themselves staring up a giant mountain. From the distance it looked like any other mountain, but closer inspection reveals that it, too, was once made of candy. However, it's all frozen over and instead of sweet, delicious delights, monstrous creatures lurk within its halls…including music that just continuously plays.
Don't Freeze. Forget about Jack Frost nipping at their noses, the chill from the mountain will constantly threaten to freeze everyone inside. They must work hard to keep warm, using dreamotion, positive thoughts, and other means to do so. Otherwise they risk freezing into a frozen statue and must be dethawed or they'll be kicked out of the dreamscape. Jack Frost will help by trying to drop random items that can be used for warmth: coats, gloves, scarves, blankets, torches, pocket heaters, hot water bottles. Hey, he's an ice spirit he can only do so much.
Monsters. From ice golems to yetis to crazed giant five horned mountain goats and more, there will be a variety of creatures that will need to be fended off as everyone makes their way up the mountain. Fire is definitely the way to go, but surprisingly any candy taken from the land below will also drive them away. They apparently don't like sweets.
Ice Mirrors. Unlike the ones from the Halloween Carnival, these mirrors are made from frozen ice and will reflect twisted visions of loss and abandonment. Loved ones suddenly leaving; homes in ruin or desolation; their own reflection in an empty void. Yet rather than despair, there will be a strange feeling of acceptance as the cold begins to wrap around them, as if it's better to be alone than to have things around them. Those who stare into the ice for too long will be drawn towards it, and should they touch the surface they will begin to freeze over. They must be pulled back and warmed up both physically and convincing them of good things from their lives.
Not only will the ice mirrors challenge the characters, they must actually be destroyed. Doing so will release a golden colored light that will fill a crystal chalice that will just mysteriously appear and disappear. The more lights captured, the fuller it will get.
Ice Queen. Those who make it through the mountain halls and the mirrors will find the throne room where the Ice Queen sits. Right in the middle of her chest is a giant shard of glass stained black, the nightmare energy palpable even from the entrance. That's clearly the problem, and the solution? The crystal chalice will appear and Jack's voice will be heard urging them to somehow pour it over that shard. Getting there will, of course, be a challenge as the Queen herself will stir upon hearing Jack's voice and start shrieking like a banshee, creating an ice storm within the room and summoning beasts that must be fought. Physical attacks will be effective, but dreamotion and anything based on positive, warm emotions and ideas will also help, especially to stave off the intense nightmare energy that will be around.
Phew, think that covers everything! Tried to give a little something of everything for everyone to pick and choose where they would like to focus on the event. We will be taking thread submissions for various parts of this event! Will they successfully help the Ice Queen? Or will she need to learn to let it go on her own? And why is Jack Frost so heavily involved…?
DREAM BOARD
How the Dream Board works:
- This is all optional, the quests are just extra content for players and while they can sometimes relate to upcoming or current events, they're just kind of "filler" stuff. Some will be set out in Songerein proper while others may involve dreams.
- The Dream Board can be found at the Plaza and quests will automatically appear on it like a bulletin board. Some will also appear in the journals. Anyone can accept them and rewards automatically generated upon completion of the task. It's a dream world, it's full of magic, it just knows.
- Quests can be done as many times as a character would do them and rewards will be delivered to the character upon completion.
- If you have any questions, comment to the designated subthread.
1201 | Rogue Reindeer. A strange herd of reindeer have made their way into town. While they're friendly, they're knocking over things and making their way into buildings and homes. Even stranger, their antlers glow. Help push these reindeer out of town and back into the Wildlands. Bonus: some are interested in seeing if they will pull sleds. If you manage to capture and harness them to one, let us know. (Mod note: they are wild and can fly. Have fun with that.) | Freshly baked reindeer shaped cookies |
1202 | Skyborne Symphony. No one knows where they came from. Maybe a dreamy innocent mind made them up. A school of beautiful glowing stingrays are flying through the sky as if they are swimming through the water. The school of stingrays doesn’t pay anyone any attention. But if anyone manages to reach them in the sky they’ll happily play with you or give you a ride through the clouds. Give them a little kiss and they might give you a little shock but it’s a shock that barely tingles. It only makes you feel lightheaded and drowsy. Perhaps find a way to shoo the stingrays away? Or just let them play with you. | A gemstone in the shape of a stingray that sings a song. |
1203 | A Grimacing Shake. A strange purple milkshake is being offered around town. The vendors are claiming it's a special wintertime milkshake that tastes like peppermint and taro and is sure to make you want to dance. Yet, anyone who seems to drink this special milkshake always ends up mysteriously and violently passed out in some random corner with the milkshake splattered all over the place. Dare to take a sip and see what the violent reaction really is or help clean up the sticky purple mess the milkshakes are leaving everywhere… | A purple milkshake. Maybe a concussion? |
1204 | LUMBERJACKS VS. ENTS! There is a big brawl happening in the Wildlands between some super muscular lumberjacks trying to trim the branches of some Ents. The Ents are having none of it, but the Lumberjacks insist their branches are much too thick and could be put to good use. Pick a side and choose who to fight. Note: no Ents are meant to be harmed, and while some Ents do need some trimming, some Lumberjacks are being too overzealous, too. | From the Lumberjacks: a nice axe From the Ents: a special branch that will grow vitality fruits all year round |
1205 | Healing Hooves. A horse breeder in town is in need of helpers that can come crack his horses. That’s right, his horses are feeling stiff and he needs them in better working condition so that he can take them out to give horse sleigh rides to the locals. Come help him give his horses a nice chiropractic treatment and get them feeling better again. He’ll reward you with one free horse-drawn sleigh ride. Perfect for a nice winter date! | One free horse-drawn sleigh ride. |
1206 | Bunny Bandits. Tiny white rabbits have been sighted all over town. And as much as they are cute they seem to be stealing warm clothing from everyone! From mittens to hats to thick socks, they take it all! Chase down these cute little fuzzy things and get your mittens back! Just be careful, they also have sheep horns and like to headbutt things when they feel threatened. | A lucky rabbit’s foot. |
