DREAM NOTES #06.5: FEBRUARY EVENT DETAILS
All right folks, time for the details for the upcoming event! There's…probably way more in here than needed, but what are we if not generous in variety?? There's still a lot of options, especially for those who want to get in on that monster transformation fun, so take a look!
✵ EVENT TIMELINE ✵
Even though everyone is sucked into the dreamscape, participation in any of the activities except for the Romeo and Juliet roles is optional. There will only be one log and it will go up on Friday, February 11. It will run through the rest of the month, however ICly the dreamscape will not appear until February 26 and will last the night.
✵ DREAMSHIFTS & DREAMSCAPES: HOW DO THEY WORK RECAP ✵
When a dreamshift occurs, all characters are pulled into a massive, powerful dreamscape that feels as if they were pulled into a completely different new world. The tapirs will briefly appear to inform everyone of what's happening so they can be aware of what's going on and what to do. Characters must try to "blend in'' and try to help fix whatever problems are occurring in the dreamscape until it eventually closes and everyone is sent back out to Songerein. Should they behave too strangely or cause the natives to feel more troubled or upset, the chances of it turning into a nightmare in the end increase.
All dreamwalking abilities are available, and while the journals do not exist, their crystals will be and is their primary means of "network" communication should it be needed. Communication through the crystals is telepathic and can be either audio or video.
✵ DREAMSCAPE SETTING ✵
For clarity, characters are sometimes referred to as dreamwalkers.
Welcome to the gothic city of Verona where the two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are in constant conflict and a fight—verbal and physical—breaks out almost every five minutes. The story is based on Romeo and Juliet and The Lindworm King. There are two prince brothers on the Montague side, Paris who has everything and Romeo cursed to one day turn into a lindworm. On the Capulet side, Juliet meets and falls in love with the lindworm prince. And around them, their two families who are in constant conflict for who knows what reason. The young couple faces an insurmountable hurdle for their love, but can they?
Here is a breakdown of what's going on in this crazy place:
- It is perpetual night with only the big yellow moon and stars hanging in the sky. Strangely… The moon has a mustache? Wait oh God it's Shakespeare. Yes, the playwright himself will be witnessing everything that occurs and taking lots of notes. Shakespeare will also be the one communicating with everyone instead of the tapirs, informing them of the situation and providing the "scripts," or the prompts in our case. He expects everyone to do their best! Because Shakespeare is fully aware that this is a dreamscape of his own design, dreamwalkers don't have to worry about blending in or convincing people they belong there. It's all basically one big play so the only "convincing" they have to worry about it is how it might flow as if they were on the stage itself.
- As for attire, everyone will be in 14th century fashion. Alterations can be made to whatever the player actually wants them in, and characters can alter their outfit on their own. They just shouldn't be surprised if it reverts back to whatever it was before. In addition, there is a masquerade so players have the extra fun of choosing a masquerade costume for their character!
- The dreamwalkers will find themselves randomly split into factions between the two families. This will be performed by players via coin flip. Heads for Montagues, tails for Capulets. This is more for flavor and additional potential conflict between everyone, so we won't have an official roster. Just keep track of which side your character is on! For the most part, there are no personality changes, but should opposing factions meet there will always be initial hostility. Whether it fades or grows may depend on the situation…and how much players want to feed into it. But by default, it will fade and everyone will behave more normally.
- The NPCS will be behaving oddly, as if not really themselves. They are like puppets, Shakespeare's own creations that will move "on script." So there will be a lot of uncanny valley for dreamwalkers who interact with them in any way. However, many will turn out to be Erasers, minions of the Story Eater. They will be hostile and aggressive, attacking the dreamwalkers any chance they get. Given the hostile situation, it will be hard to distinguish an Eraser from an NPC. Erasers are tough foes, but they can be beaten. Upon elimination, they burst into ink, papers, and ash, a telling sign of what they are (for the record, any NPCs killed will just fall over and disappear a la video game style).
- Leading the Erasers will be is a winged Noctaere that will appear every now and then. It fires arrows that turns the NPCs into Erasers, though it has special arrows for the dreamwalkers. Details on that will be provided in the prompts. There are no other noctaere.
- Deaths are possible. Should someone die within the dreamscape, except for Romeo and Juliet they will turn into a little wisp for a little while before "respawning" back to their original form. They can interact with anyone while a wisp. Romeo and Juliet's deaths will trigger the end of the dreamscape so ICly when they die the dreamscape will start to close and they will wake up in Songerein soon after. No one will completely die, they will only stay dead within the dreamscape. When they wake up in Songerein after the dreamscape ends, they will feel a bit battered and tired, but unharmed. Bear in mind that the moment they die will feel realistic so it may affect how characters react to it later.
There will be Bonus prompts for specific tasks. We will request thread submissions that will affect the rewards and post-event effects start next month, March.
✵ LINDWORMEO AND JULIET ✵
Here is a brief summary of the prompts that will be going up on the log. There will be a form for players to submit requested threads. The first section are objectives only for those who sign up for Romeo and Juliet. The second section is for everyone else.
» ROMEO AND JULIET ONLY
Reminder: These prompts are locked to Romeo and Juliet only and they will be focusing on this set. Those cast as Romeo will suffer the lindworm curse. It will start with partial transformation/effects in the beginning and worsen over time until potentially becoming full lindworm. Those cast in these roles will also be fully aware that at the end of the road is tragedy, but they also will be aware that death is only in the dream and will return safely once the dreamshift ends.
In addition, while the characters will need to do all of the objectives, players can choose which prompts they actually want to thread and handwave. If handwaved, just write up a brief blurb of what happens as you progress through the thread. You only need to thread out at least one objective, and it's possible to combine objectives into one giant scene or flow right after the other.
Finally, the characters will have a little "essence" of Romeo and Juliet in them. They won't really have any personality change, but the feelings they have towards their partner will be stronger than usual and they may have a tendency to wax poetic/speak Shakespearan. They may also have strange moments where they don't feel quite themselves, particularly during the romance scenes. The two souls are reaching out for each other…! Have fun with that.
- Love at First Sight. Set during the masquerade ball, Romeo is forbidden from attending and must sneak his way in through disguise. Fortunately, his transformation is partial, with only one side of his body showing scales. There he meets Juliet and the two share a dance and fall in love.
- Balcony Scene. After the masquerade, a secret tryst filled with declarations of undying love…through song. Time to make it a musical number. Romeo better work extra hard since his brother has set his sights on Juliet.
- Elope. Despite only knowing each other for a day, the two must get to the Friar and have a secret wedding. What happens after is up to the players, but the two will need to eventually return home to prepare for their future.
- Runaways. Juliet learns that she is arranged to marry Paris, Romeo's older brother. Bit of a problem given her current marital status. Instead of doing the whole poisoning thing, Romeo and Juliet must run away and not get caught, meaning this is now a stealth mission. If detected, they must fight through and escape. Their tragic fate must not happen here for a tragedy hits hardest when they think there is hope.
- Find the Cure. Once out of town, Romeo's curse will have worsened to make it difficult for him to move. They chance upon three old women who seem trustworthy and knowledgeable enough to tell them of the cure. It can be made but it's temporary. The final ingredient is told only to Juliet: he must have the blood of his lover. What will she do with that cryptic information?
- Tragic Ending. War has broken out upon finding both Romeo and Juliet missing and a servant tattling on them. Now soldiers are out to kill Romeo and take back Juliet. WHAT WILL HAPPEN!? HOW WILL THIS END??? At this point Romeo will be able to turn into a complete Lindworm if he hasn't taken the cure with Juliet's blood. If he has taken the full cure with Juliet's blood, then he will not be able to transform for he is now a normal human teenage boy.
» EVERYONE ELSE
No sign-ups required for this portion. Those cast as Romeo and Juliet can tag other threads set for the "Masquerade," "Paris scenes," "Family Feud," and "Love is a Battlefield;" they would just need to be set to before the beginning of their first scene.
- Masquerade. Everyone can partake in the masquerade either as guests, servants, or musicians. There is the grand ballroom, but there are also gardens and terraces that they can use. Don't forget the masks! Bonus: Help the prepwork by finding materials for the tailors, ingredients and meals for the chefs, and gathering the band.
- Extra Scenes. There are a few specific "scenes" featuring key characters from the original play. No sign ups are required so anyone can slip into the role. Those who do will have a little "essence" of the original character. No full personality change, but they might feel certain impulses or find it easier to slip into the role.
- Paris v. Juliet: During the "Masquerade" and after Juliet has met Romeo, Paris and Juliet share a dance and Paris is an arrogant flirt. Will he sway Juliet or will she shut him down? (Note: anyone can fill in for Juliet)
- Paris v. Romeo: Set between "Love at First Sight" and the "Balcony" scenes, Paris taunts Romeo and declares he'll marry Juliet. Romeo ain't having that time to fight it out. (Note: anyone can fill in for Romeo)
- Benvolio's Attempts: Romeo's #1 supporter, he tries to find a cure in the libraries and chances upon something promising. However it goes awry and he starts turning into a Lindworm instead. It's temporary, but it leaves him out of sorts and someone needs to protect him or he might be mistaken and be killed.
- Tybalt v. Mercutio: The reason can be anything, but Tybalt goads Mercutio by insulting Romeo and Mercutio won't stand for it. The two now duel, but will it be to the death!? If so, refer to the Death rules in the section above.
- Paris v. Juliet: During the "Masquerade" and after Juliet has met Romeo, Paris and Juliet share a dance and Paris is an arrogant flirt. Will he sway Juliet or will she shut him down? (Note: anyone can fill in for Juliet)
Contents may change slightly at the time of posting.
✵ R&J SIGN-UPS ✵
There is a designated subthread for those who wish to sign up for the Romeo and Juliet roles. You do not have to explicitly state which one, but you can if you have a preference. It is preferred if pairs are already made, but it's not required! Individuals can sign up for the roles and we will try to match players we think will work best together. Individuals can also voluntarily pair themselves with someone. If there is an odd number, we may ask players to either reconsider or try and find someone to partner with.
Tentative cap of 10 pairs. We don't think it'll hit, but it's okay if we have one or two over.
Big reminder that those who sign up for Romeo and Juliet are locked into the R&J prompts and are expected to focus on the objectives they choose. However it is possible for characters to still meet others before the first scene. They just won't be able to help or interact with anyone else once they start on the lover's tragic journey, so just keep in mind the timing.

QUESTIONS

Characters are fully aware that they have to do these kind of scene objectives and they can play it loosely. For example if we take the Tybalt v. Mercutio duel, the two characters can be friendly with each other at first and just kind of banter and mess around, and then they can also be serious in their role and spit out lines like, "It's time for you to die for your uncouth words, Tybalt! I won't let you slander my cousin any longer!" "Hah, you're all bark and no bite, Mercutio!" or something.
This is more pertinent for the ones who "play out" a role (Romeo, Juliet, Paris, Benvolio, Mercutio, Tybalt). Everyone else can pretty much just do whatever without worrying about what Shakespeare thinks.

Also, will house affiliation affect the extra scenes? I wanted to throw Luca at the Benvolio thing and the coin sorted him into the Capulet house.

+ From what I've read previously, it sounds like Baba Yaga's gifts (the potion and the talismans) cannot come with characters into dreamscapes, even if they hold them in Songerein. Is that still correct?
+ And remind me, can characters' weapons come with them into the dreamscape if they are already period-appropriate like a sword, staff, whip, etc.?
no subject
- You are correct that potions and talismans and such would not have been able to come into the dreamscapes.
- Weapons don't "come" with the characters in the physical sense. However they are readily available to the character, either already at their side or easily conjured by the character. This is true for any weapon, and the weapon can change in appearance or function to fit the dreamscape should the player desire. Otherwise it's the usual by default.

That's what I thought, thanks for the clarification!
SIGN-UPS: ROMEO AND JULIET
Fill out the following form and comment to this subthread to sign up for the Romeo and Juliet roles. Reminder that we have a tentative 10 pair cap. While it would be easier if those who sign up already have a partner in mind, individuals can still sign up and be later matched. If we have an odd number, we may have to ask players to reconsider or find a partner.

Character(s): Dohalim il Qaras | menancia
Preferred Role: Romeo, but honestly he would do either... with a straight face...
Extra/Questions: Since he doesn't come with a pre-planned partner at the moment, feel free to use him as a pinch-hitter to round things out if you don't get enough sign-ups! I'm real easy, he's just going to be ridiculously into this event from every angle.

Player(s): Christine and Colleen
Character(s): Dohalim il Qaras | menancia and Hilda Valentine Goneril | indolentaxe
Preferred Role: Dohalim is Romeo, Hilda is Juliet
Extra/Questions: I can't wait for Hilda to be big mad that she gets to be the romantic lead only to have to die at the end. :')

Character(s): Vanitas (
Preferred Role: Vanitas as Juliet & Sora as Romeo
Extra/Questions:
I guess Mish says that Vani now has to be in a lace dress?

Character(s): Zelda |
Preferred Role: Zelda as Juliet, Kor as Romeo
Extra/Questions: Nope
ROKUROU | EUSTACE
Character: Rokurou | Tales of Berseria
Faction: Montague
Costume: Oh man I haven't decided yet but I'll get to it before event is up
Plotting: All the fight ones...of course...crying. Having him turn into a daemon lindworm is also rather appealing to me so that'll be a thing 👀 But yeah general fighting Capulets, the Erasers, lindworm shenanigans, and I could throw him in for a Tybalt v. Mercutio scene if someone is interested!
========================================================
Character: Eustace | Granblue Fantasy
Faction: Montague
Costume: I CANNOT BRAIN RIGHT NOW
Plotting: He's signed up to be Romeo so he's a lot more limited. But I can toss him in any of the other prompts before he's whisked off for his tragic love story! I'd limit it to the Masquerade, Feud, and the Paris v. Romeo scenes.
no subject
Character: somnus | FFXV
Faction: I am not sure (i.e. i have not decided)!
Costume: Somnus is staying in his armor, except, it's going to be a 14th century suit of gilded armor. So, you know, a much more classic look to fit the setting.
Plotting:
--Taking on roles in dreams is not something with which he is very familiar, so he'll be content to remain observing for the most part.... which OOCLY, I absolutely do not want him to be content C:< So! Imma put him up as a Paris in either the Paris v. Romeo or Paris v. Juliet scenes. Any Romeos want to chat about marriage (as a widower, he'll no doubt fail at this bc he'll tell any Romeos to treat their Juliets well and have a long and happy marriage ;;) or any Juliets wanna be (fail!-)flirted with? hmu
--Love is a Battlefield. He can join in a fight scene, np np
Extra: Anything else you want to mention.
no subject
Character: Ira | Kingdom Hearts
Faction: Montague
Costume:Plotting: Masquerade - Ira is already set and can help with either prep work, or having fun at the event. Given he is a Montague, maybe there is some sneaking around?
I'm leaning towards the extra scene of Benvolio's research attempts since that's something Ira is good at. Open to him either becoming or protecting the lindwyrm.
He is also good for fighting off any nasties that come their way.

Character: Anastasia Romanova | Anastasia 1997
Faction: Capulet; someone was able to did a coin toss for me some time ago because I am way too new to virtual coin tosses.
Costume: Anya is going to be dressed in a noblewoman’s gown like this.
Plotting: Anya will be lending a hand in getting the masquerade ball ready (especially with tailor work and cooking) and attending it as a guest. As for Love is a Battlefield, she will absolutely join in the fight and freeze or whack any Nocteare and Eraser that she can find. And gather all the white roses to return the affected Erasers back to normal people again.
Extra: She already has experience doing something back at the Realm of Stories with the Sugar Plum Beast, so it is going to be a cakewalk for her.
Nyanka
Character: Name | Canon
Faction: Capulet
Costume: Not entirely sure, probably will end up putting him in nobleman clothes.
Plotting: Luca will be tackling the Benvolio mission and attempts to fix the curse with SCIENCE! Which of course backfires and turns him into a lindworm that seems to have been crossed with an electric eel.
Extra: Luca may not be a combatant by nature, but he does have a cutlass and he knows how to use it. Plus he knows how to defend himself from Erasers.
Character: Hunter de Vil | 101 Dalmatian Street
Faction: Montague
Costume: Since I was allowed, I'm sticking the kid in a costume from an abstract musical version of Notre Dame Du Paris.
Plotting: Other than picking up stuff for the tailor, I'm not sure what misadventures Hunter is gonna get himself into. One snag I do want to happen is for the kid to get distracted by something and find out he can completely turn into a dog. And he isn't sure how to change back. At least a dog's keen sense of smell could be very useful in locating rose petals.

Which means Zelda will have to deal with a very awkward lindworm.

Character: Oriphi | original character
Faction: Montague
Costume: something like this, with more flowers and ribbons in her hair and also on her horns, because why not?
Plotting: Ori will be attending the masquerade as a guest, but she will help with preparation and probably continue to fuss about if everything is going well through the duration. She's very non-confrontational so she'll probably try to shy away from Capulets, but that's all the more reason to come chat with her :') Also! She'll be happy to gather roses to help with people who turn into lindworms.
Extra: If you do see her dancing with a Capulet, no you don't...
