DREAM NOTES #07: MARCH 1, 2022

Phew, February was the shortest month and yet it was probably the busiest. Applications are open again, so prepare the welcome wagons! We have an IC poll regarding law enforcement council of sorts, so please take a look and vote for it! OOC feedback is also welcomed. We're also going to tweak a few things regarding our event schedules and see how it goes.

✵ CALENDAR ✵

Here is our current schedule for the month:

3/01: Apps open
3/03: Final apps due, begin processing apps
3/04: Player Intro post, CR Meme
3/07: Mini Event
3/29-31: Activity Check
4/01: Dream Notes #08 and new Dream Board
4/01~???: ~EVENT~
4/28-30: Activity Check
DREAM TREND: This month's dream trends may involve any of the following themes: fortune and misfortune, flying, and the color green.
WEATHER: It's not quite yet spring, but it's getting close! By now the snow will have all melted, and while it's still a big chilly in the mornings and nights, the afternoons warm to light jacket temperatures. A few late winter/early spring storms roll through, so keep an umbrella handy. But after every rain, there will always be a rainbow, some planting themselves on the very ground. Although one can't walk on them, going through the colorful arches will temporarily "paint" the person the color they pass through with a bit of a starry glitter effect.
OTHER NOTES: Hope everyone likes the color green. There's going to be a lot of it this month.

Reminder that Applications are open and they are open until Thursday, March 3rd at 11:59PM US Central Time. Good luck to everyone! ICly, the characters will be alerted of new arrivals by the tapirs suddenly popping and flying through yelling, "NEW DREAMERS ARE COMING NEW DREAMERS ARE COMIIIIIING!!!!"

The moon is still gone.

✵ ACTIVITY CHECK RESULTS ✵

Congratulations to everyone who commented on our Activity Check! The following characters were removed from the game:

Basil [personal profile] photographics
Emil Västerström [personal profile] enflame
Ephemer [personal profile] fleetinglight
Jiang Cheng [personal profile] legbreakings
Jiang Yanli [personal profile] soups
Lalli Hotakainen [personal profile] skittering
Ryner Lute [personal profile] alphastigma
Wei Wuxian [personal profile] mannerless

If anyone was swept because they missed AC, you can reapply in the next cycle. Just fair warning, we will notice if this happens more than once and we may not allow immediate reapplication the next time. We have also updated the Activity Check section of the Game Info to reflect our policy regarding squatting as mentioned in the mini State of the Game last month.

This puts our player population to 47/75, which means our new player reserve/apps slots are at a maximum 28.

✵ WORLD UPDATES ✵

Be it new NPCs, creatures, places, or some other discovery or creation, the world of Songerein continues to grow! So here are a few things as a result of the Dream Board and other submissions:

General Population: With the influx of new people coming in along with the character applications, the general population will increase from ~300 to ~400. Safe to say it'll bump up about 100 each app round. It should also be noted that there are more non-human residents, so it's not all just humans roaming around! Other domesticated animals are also appearing around town, though whether they are from other worlds or finally revealing themselves is a different matter.

NPCs:

  • The Wizard, a nature-attuned magical hermit. When not in his tower, he spends most of his time with the mystical side of things, communicating with forest spirits and mermaids, breaking up conflicts between the hidden nonhuman residents of the town, and so forth; highly interested in studying dreamscapes and dream energy.

He can brew potions that help connect and communicate with nature and its residents, make and break seals over dangerous locations, and conjure up magic-infused structures with the right resources, such as ones that allow the user to change their appearance—but only for those he deems worthwhile. That said, he's not a total misanthrope; he considers it his responsibility to address magical dangers to mundane people, and may not be opposed to setting up the occasional holiday maze if it pleases the fae... maybe he'll even start looking for an apprentice to pass down his skills?

Beastiary:

  • Tea Mouse. Discovered by Ryunosuke and Zidane, Tea Mice are small mouse-like creatures. Rather than fur, they seem to grow tea leaves. The flavor of those tea leaves is dependent on the creature's mood. If they’re sleepy, you may get chamomile tea. If it’s excited, you may get something with a bright citrus flavor. More complex feelings may produce something new and wild that confounds the taste buds. The creature also has sugar claws and can produce an extra sweet drop of honey from it's tail.

Places:

  • A small vineyard near Barok’s home, which was temporarily an ice fortress due to Bleeding Heart influence. It's better by the end of the month. Mostly.

  • A corgi playground being built by Nier.

  • A large dog park within the Central Plaza that Eustace is building.

  • Reverein Communal Clinic. A clinic set up by Jude and Yujin that's now officially open to the public. It's at the north of town plaza between the residential and market district, close to the riverside. The second floor will be dedicated to research into plants and development of medicine in relation to it. Will probably start providing first aid kits good to travel with down the road, other additions may come depending on IC developments.

  • The Lady of Bliss. It's a bakery and bistro ran by Madhuri with a shifting menu every month to cover as many worlds' cuisines as possible, all while imparting feel-good dreamotion into the ingredients. Come to the Lady for a pick-me-up after a bad dream or a rough date!

  • The Wild Harvest serves various western and eastern style earth-based street food dishes. A special menu is rotated every month.
Wild Harvest's specials for the month are:

    • Burger Sliders (Vegan Option Available)
    • Fish and Chips
    • Japanese-Style Curry (Vegan Option Available)
    • Rosemary Nightfall
(Blueberries and rosemary-based with gin, vodka, or club soda for non-alcoholic.)

As mentioned, the moon is still absent from the otherwise starry sky. Is it possible to make a new one…?

✵ PRISON TREE & LAW ENFORCEMENT ✵

As a result of the recent uptick in unregulated crimes and especially after Doctor Otto's exploits, some semblance of law enforcement is beginning to shape up. Previously everyone had been more or less peaceful with people resolving problems on their own. Now, however, it seems time to have some kind of structure in what to do.

For starters, there is now an official prison made out from a large tree. Located in the swamps, specifically the Smelly Bogs, it's quite a large and ominous looking tree with cells made within its roots, and the roots will conform to the prisoner a cell made just for them. The tree itself is sentient in its own way so it makes for its own jailer, however other people and creatures have stepped in to help safeguard it. For now, since most crimes have been minor there hasn't been a need for strict enforcement or extended stays, but who knows what the future may bring. On its branches are these creepy oozing pods. They do not fall nor do they ever open, but sometimes in the dead of night muffled unearthly screams are sworn to be heard. No one knows what's in those pods or what would cause them to open, but some of the swamp fae can sense danger within them and advise to stay clear of them. Fortunately they remain high up in the tree.

Additionally, Yujin Mikotaba had made a post regarding potentially setting up some kind of council. As a follow-up, we are throwing an IC poll on how to handle a more official group. The IC poll has questions for the characters to consider, so please answer the questions as the character.

Of course OOC feedback from the players is appreciated, and those can be made here.

Although we feature the poll in our post, the mod team will be more hands off with this and are just here to help promote and organize it a bit. Should this group form we are happy to help provide situations for those involved in the group, such as including special quests or something every month or so. However we would also prefer if the members are capable of creating or at least make suggestions for us to use. We're due for some kind of "outlaw" or "bandit" raid of sorts—

✵ FEBRUARY EVENT RESULTS ✵

Another dreamscape event completed! Shakespeare got a lot of interesting material out of it, and hopefully that strange winged being was pushed out. Will we see it again…? Yes. Here are the rewards gained from the event:

  • Regain Bauble. Within the first week of the month, everyone will find a special little bauble next to their pillow with a note that reads, "Thank you for your help in that dreamscape! Throw this into the Wishing Well to receive a special item from home. Just imagine the item and it will appear. (watch out for the glitter)". As briefly described, this bauble is basically the game's "regain token." With this item, characters can throw it into the Wishing Well and receive the item they think about. All regains are manifestations of the item rather than the original and are affected by the game's limitations so nerfs may need to be applied. All regain submissions may be posted to the Regain Wishing Well entry.

  • Item: Rose Cure (1). A small vial filled with special rose extract that will cure any curse that is related to love or hatred. The entire vial must be consumed and must remain sealed until its use for it to be effective. It comes with a recipe so that it can be recreated. It should be noted that only the roses from the new Rose Garden will work for this cure.

  • Item: Masquerade Costumes. —sort of. The mask will appear in their rooms, but only the design of the costume will be there along with it. The design can be taken to Madame Blackbird or another tailor to be recreated, however the character will need to provide the materials for it.

  • Location: Theater Row. On the southeast side of the Riverside is a row of buildings designated for theater and all work related to it such as costuming, construction, and training those who wish to become actors or singers. There is also a book store that has copies of various stories and plays from all over the multiuniverse. It's not a big store so it doesn't have a giant collection, but it's a start with the most popular, well-known titles. Of course because it is a new development everything is on the "basic" level for now, but it will hopefully grow in time.

  • Location: Rose Garden. A large garden made of white and red roses has bloomed overnight in one of the parks in the Central Plaza. Just walking through this garden will make anyone feel more amiable and "loving" towards everything and everyone around them, and their petals can be used for a variety of romantic scents and…other uses.

  • Creature: Lindworms. Residing at the Cliffs near the Wasteland are lindworms. They are filled with hatred and anger and will attack anything that crosses it. Anyone who encounters these powerful creatures must be careful as a bite or claw strike could curse them to change into a lindworm. The lindworm's blood is necessary for the cure, and the blood and scales can be used as cures for other curses related to hatred and anger.

✵ MINI EVENT: LEPRECHAUNS ✵

In lieu of a "Character Intro Log" or a "Welcome Log" of sorts that we've sort of done in the past, we're going to use the time slot for a more generic "mini event" that everyone can directly participate in. Since the TDM serves as a soft Intro for new players, the mini event will give them a chance for a "secondary" intro of sorts. It also helps us introduce some of the random themes and background effects happening that month, and if we have something "interesting" planned (for example, the owl event from January), we can use this time slot for that. If this is successful we'll try and do this for every app round (if we have content planned).

Now for the main details!

  • Leprechauns. These well-known little men are popping up into town for a few reasons, and those reasons are why there is a mini event happening. There are different groups of them and they are causing mayhem all over, some with well-intention, some very not.

  • Pranks and misfortune. April Fool's is coming in a little early with one group of leprechauns with yellow caps running around causing pranks all over. From minor "shoelaces suddenly tied" to "paint falling from scaffolding," anything goes with them. In doing so, they are spreading some bad luck which can be countered a few ways, such as finding four leaf clovers or doing good deeds. Those who participate in the pranking will be seen as an ally to this group and won't be pranked on. In addition, those who wear any amount of green on them will be spared from more severe pranks.

  • New shoes. Another group of leprechauns sporting blue hats are hoping to start their own business in town, specifically in the shoe making and repair business. They are quite skilled in their work and will happily take custom orders so long as materials are provided as they start preparing more general stock for the ever growing populace. However, some of the younger apprentices are a bit zealous in their "advertisement efforts" and are using their magic and skills to alter shoes unprompted. Whether stored at home or on the person's foot, shoes are getting a "redesigned," from small embellishments to completely different styles. These apprentices try to match the style to the owner…but sometimes they get a little carried away, especially when they start competing. Fortunately, the changes can be undone and some may get a free pair for their troubles.

  • Where is the gold? These green clad bearded men are well known for their greed, with legends telling of their gold kept in special pots that appear at the end of the rainbow. And what luck that rainbows are appearing all over the place with the weather! However, keeping their gold in special pots has its problems, especially when the rainbows they were hidden under decide to move around. Thus these leprechauns are out looking for their pots of gold and are being quite aggressive about it, shouting at anyone who happens to have a rainbow above their homes or is playing in the colorful rainbows. Should anyone stumble upon the pot, it's better to leave it alone or immense misfortune will fall upon them like a curse. What kind of curse will vary (ie, up to the player). Securing and helping the distressed leprechaun, on the other hand, will bring about immense wealth and will improve relations with this group. Should favor be gained, the leprechauns may share their gold with potential to create a bank. Just don't ask where all that gold came from. Should be harmless right? Right?

  • Red Cones v. Red Caps. Finally, there is a smaller contingent of leprechauns who don special red coned shaped hats that can actually be used as a weapon. They prefer to live out on the edges of the Wildlands near the Cliffs, however the Redcaps have been bothering them and so they seek to recruit any who wish to help aid them in a glorious battle between the small men.

This is all happening throughout most of the month, and players are welcome to use the themes and prompts in their own logs. There are a few Dream Board quests related to the incidents as well, and they can be used within the log. There will also be a submission form regarding the event, in particular for the green leprechauns and their gold. As indicated in the details, if they gain positive favor then Reverein may have its first bank and a simple coin currency may be established to replace the current barter system.

✵ FEELING LUCKY? ✵

Along with the leprechauns, there is a general theme for the month related to good and bad luck. We have some specific catalysts within the event that can be used, but here are some more general details regarding how this works. By default, everyone has "neutral" luck wherein it's neither specifically one or the other. This month, however, characters will find themselves experiencing one side of the spectrum more.

Good luck. Good luck can be obtained by performing good deeds, helping others, being kind, and just general positive vibes. Dreams will be more fulfilling and leave them more well rested. As to how the luck is manifested, it can range from cliche tropes such as finding valuable gems on the ground, finding something that's been lost for a while, receiving a surplus of goods, getting special discounts, etc. to something more specific to the character.

Bad luck. On the opposite end is bad luck. Being mean, tricking people, and having negative vibes will feed into that bad luck. Although they might not have nightmares, unpleasant "bad" dreams will occur more often to leave them feeling more tired and grumpy than usual. Similar to good luck, how bad luck is manifested can be cliche to more creative. Those with bad luck may also feel a bit more envious of others with better fortune than them.

Clovers. There is a dream board quest involving these, but clovers will help maintain good luck or help drive away bad luck. Any clover will work, but the more leaves it has the better. They only go up to four, and finding the golden four leaf clover will guarantee good luck for as long as it doesn't wither. Taking good care of these clovers will be necessary, and good emotions and water will help preserve them. Just beware the brown star leaf clover. It looks just like a four leaf clover, but closer inspection will reveal a small brown star shape on each leaf. This clover is filled with misfortune and will bring immediate bad luck to any who pluck it.

✵ APRIL PREVIEW(?) ✵

Not so much of a preview and more of a heads up on the scheduling. As indicated on the calendar, we're going to run the event starting the first of April, which is a big change compared to how we usually run our big events more around mid-month. Most of the reason is the event itself requires it to be on the first. As for how long it will be… Most likely just lasting the first two weeks of the month, but we are still developing it so a more definite timeframe will be given when the time comes.

We are also considering moving our big bi-monthly events to start either on the first or close to the first of that month. Since it's not an app month we have the flexibility, and the scheduling may work better for both us mods and the players since the Test Drive hits the middle of the month (unless we move TDM to the last week). We'll see how it goes this time and next time (June), so we'll be welcome to any feedback!

✵ DREAM BOARD: MARCH 2022 ✵

How the Dream Board works:
  • This is all optional, the quests are just extra content for players and while they can sometimes relate to upcoming or current events, they're just kind of "filler" stuff. Some will be set out in Songerein proper while others may involve dreams.

  • The Dream Board can be found at the Plaza and quests will automatically appear on it like a bulletin board. Some will also appear in the journals. Anyone can accept them and rewards automatically generated upon completion of the task. It's a dream world, it's full of magic, it just knows.

  • Quests can be done as many times as a character would do them and rewards will be delivered to the character upon completion.

  • If you have any questions, comment to the designated subthread.

QUEST
REWARD
301 Vine traps. There are patches of frozen areas covered in thick vines and thorns that have attracted nightmare energy corrupted animals; some of these animals are trapped within the twisting vines. These need to be destroyed, but be careful as not only are the thorns sharp, but the frozen pieces are cold enough to burn if touched with bare skin. They are scattered throughout the residential and town areas, and some are also within the areas of the Wildlands closest to occupied areas. Dreamotion fire and other positive feelings seem to help melt these otherwise unthawing thorn-covered vines. Careful of the shards! If simply broken, they slice into skin easily and burn. Don't try to eat any of the animals' meat if killed, they're rotted through-and-through. Peace of mind and getting rid of potential dangers so close to residents
302 Preparing for Spring planting.Looks like things are starting to warm up, so it's time to get ready to try and plant these fields! Problem is, all that snow and the whole owl thing from the other month has made a mess of things out here, and a lot of fields are still untended. There's only a small handful of us farmers so we probably won't be able to get all the fields available, but we'd like any extra hands who can help clear out fields, mend fences, and gathering seeds for us to plant. Promise of a good harvest and first pickings once crops have grown
303 Orange hate feather removal. Those orange feathers used in those hate arrows are still floating around! Individually they're not too bad, but more than one and you can really start feeling all that hate! Where did these come from?? Whatever, help collect them before some other genius decides to make something out of them! Just be careful, they can still sway your emotions, so maybe those who have strong "love" feelings are better suited to collect them. Not getting shot by a hate arrow!!!
304 Four leaf clovers. With all this bad luck and leprechaun nonsense going around, I'd like to start making some charms made from four leaf clovers. But with everyone else trying to get some, it's getting more difficult to find! I've heard that there is a special patch that grows at the edge of the Wildlands. It might be more dangerous, but getting there and coming back is a sign of their lucky power! Please bring back as many as you can! (Note: there are Jackalopes that like to eat these clovers and despite their small appearances are vicious and will attack any who threaten their feeding grounds.) Free good luck clover charm
305 Money Toad. Word from some fae is that there is a "money toad" that is said to bring immense fortune and wealth to those who find it. It's said they can be found around those about to have good news and fortune under the full moon, but without the moon in the world, it might be more difficult to find. Some have been spotted around "sparkling bodies of water." Catch a few and bring them back to town to help counter all the misfortune falling on us! (Note: no such frogs actually exist (currently) and a different kind of frog is being mistaken for it instead.) Three small gemstones
306 Elemental cores. There are groups of animated golems that have appeared recently. They don't seem intelligent and are mostly passive but will attack when approached. Embedded within their bodies are special rocks called elemental cores infused with the golem's respective element. An air golem's core can create wind, a fire golem's core can create fire. They aren't powerful enough to create spells, but they could have potential uses to help our quality of life! Bring some back so we can do some research! (Note: the golems do not need to be killed as the cores exist within various parts of their body including limbs. They can be found in large areas related to their element. Water near any water source; air up on top hills, trees, and cliffs; earth in rocky ridges, forests; fire closer to the Wasteland deserts.) One of each type of core obtained
307 GET RID OF THE FROGS. I don't know who the hell brought in all these noisy frogs, but get rid of them before I turn them into frog leg stew!! THEY'RE SO LOUD AAAHH (Note: Same frogs as the "Money Toad" quest. THIS QUEST WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL MID-MONTH.) Sweet silence

✵ END NOTES ✵

If our characters have a certain inclination to meat regardless of it's state of....freshness.....can they still eat the animals from the vine traps without ill effects or would it do something?

Ohhhh boy--good to know, thank you!
